I want to write a book

I want to write a book. Now what? What advice do you have for me on getting started?

Three weeks ago, I published my second book Under Contract: Life in the Middle of Dreams. Since then, the response has been wonderful. I've been so blessed to have people come alongside me to cheer me on, gain readers and the list goes on. If you haven't already visit Amazon to purchase a copy and or leave a review.

Publishing a book triggers questions for inspiring authors. This excites me. I want to share my personal intense journey in hopes of helping others. Although everything from start to finish can not be shared in one blog post, I've prayed about how to answer the one question mentioned above, "What advice do you have for me to get started?" This is a very board question. One a book could be written about. We all know we have to start somewhere. So here goes. A good starting point for an overall view of knowledge of writing a book.

If you've known since you were a child you wanted to write a book and or people tell you often you should write a book. Then those two are good leverage for a starting point, but not to be mistaken for you should or the only reasons someone should. These two can be used by God to trigger work for His kingdom. Yet the timing could not be just yet. Knowing this, never give up. Write. Write some more. Read. Read more. Brainstorm. Pick a topic. Tell a friend. Pray. Believe. Trust. Press forward. If you've been called to write a book doors to complete the project will eventually open.

You will hear, create your brand, create your voice, and build a tribe in order to write a book, get published and then successfully have sales. These can be done by:

a blog
blog daily
vlog
vlog daily
make videos often
Twitter
Instagram
Pinterest
Facebook
email list
join a writers group
etc.

Although all of these are wonderful, an inspiring writer is sure to become overwhelmed trying to tackle all trying to gain author status. As each child's personality is different, each writer is different. What works for one writer's personality might not be good for the next. Focus on what's good for you personally, you alone. What is time manageable for you? The moment you feel overwhelm back away. Slow down. Pray. Ask God to show you what's natural for your life. If it's only two from the list, then that's awesome. If it's five or all then great too. There could even be some not listed here. These just came to the top of my mind. The overall point is run with what works for you. Just because you see a successful author brand themselves through Instagram, email, and daily blogging is not what's going to make you the same successful author or any inspiring creative person whether it is music, artwork, housewife, married woman or even your health status. Horn in on your daily prayer life, your relationship with Christ and ask for His direction for you personally. Run with what He communicates to you. Be confident. Why work so hard to fit in when you've been called to be set apart. 2 Corinthains 6:17.

Here is a list of things to keep in mind about writing a book:

- Will the book be fiction or nonfiction? One idea is all it takes. Love the idea you aim towards, because you will grow tired along the way. Say "I do" until the end. Day after day, things can tend to grow boring. You will want to bail at some point, give up, don't. If you say "I do" don't bail. Great rewards at the end. I promise. If your writing has characters talk about them. Be prepared to share what your work of progress is about. Build up curiosity.

Have a notebook.  Keep an organized notebook to your liking. Keep handy. Even next to your bed. Night time gains great writers. I wrote my first book, Daddy's Briefcase, in the late hours of the night.  Warning, you will not remember in the morning. Keep as many of your notes in one place, a notebook, or it's going to get crazy. If you tend to write on a slip of paper here and there transfer to you notebook or tape the slip of paper in you notebook. Notebook. Voicemail. Ipad. Iphone. I Notes.

Time management, manage your writing to fit your schedule, some write working full time, some write while home with their kids. Me personally, I've written both of my books, Daddy's Briefcase and Under Contract around my families schedule. I am married, mother of two girls who are eight years apart. Sacrificing ounces of your time adds up. Try to write every day. There will be days or weeks you take off. Don't be alarmed. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12

- Writing a book can be comparable to having a baby. Researching. Planning. Writing. Creates laboring pains. You may even cry. One good thing is the book isn't going to cry. Like a dogs not going to talk back but they are still children. A book is your baby. It's fun the day of delivery, release day. Then the true work begins when everyone's back to their regular schedules. The pain you've been feeling, can't be compared to the joy that's coming. Romans 8:18

- The creative process is all yours. View other's work to inspire you. Go to the bookstore. Look at books. Look at books you have at home. Study the cover. Is it shiney or matte? Which do you like? White pages? Cream pages? Styles of writing? Which author grab your attention? Warning, don't compare your creativity to others. It's a trap to instant failure. You must seek the Lords guidance and create what only you've been called to.

- Not everyone writes an outline. I personally did not write an outline for either of my books. Others I know have not as well. Then I know others who have. Kinda like some can go to the grocery without a list and come out with all intended saving loads of cash. While some go by a step by step list to accomplish the same task. What works for one doesn't always work for the other.

- Write what you would like to read. This was done with my second book. Verse novels have grown to be a favorite read of mine through the years. It got to the point I was looking for a fresh, clean, family-oriented, faith-based, etc. verse novel. This type of verse novel did not exist. With these desires, the Lord opened a door for me to write one myself. I have a video on my facebook page about this very topic. It's under the Under Contract album.

- Editor + Proof reader. Value these people's time. It will take just that, time. Be patient. Work on something different while you wait. Make bookmarkers. Design book cover. Create a Goodreads account. Sign up for an ISBN number if your printing company doesn't provide or if you want full rights of you book. Apply for a Library of Congress Number. Think of marketing plans. Type copyright page. Type author note page. Type Acknowledgements page. Check print prices.

- Think of publishing early on. Will you self-publish or traditional publish? Self-publish is you holding rights to your book while doing all the work yourself. Basically, self-publishing is like owning your own business because technically you are. Traditional would be with a publishing house which typically hold onto certain rights. You will need to write a query letter and wait for acceptance from book agents. Rejection does happen. Rejection does hurt. Continue on until your print needs are met. I traveled the Traditional route sending out query letters with my first book. All response where rejection letters. I moved on after a certain time frame towards self-publishing. Self-publishing to some degree is easier this day and time. Even so, say 5 years ago. Remember, lots of people want to write books too. The time frame to write a book, edit and publish will take longer than you think. My first book took me 5 years and my second book took 3 years. Reminder John Grisham self-published his first book.

Think about: book theme, writing style, voice. You might not have all the answers at first. They will come. Start somewhere. Start writing. Get the first few thoughts out on paper. You can always back up, skip over or delete. There will always be a first draft. You can handwrite this or type in Word or something similar. When it feels off, it's off. Trust your intuition, always.

- Not everyone will support you. Find a trusted friend to bounce ideas off. Some will make you feel your writing is not good enough. So don't tell yourself it's not good enough. It is keep moving on. Whatever you do work heartily for the Lord, not men. Colossians 3:23

Writing can be fun one day. Then another day it can be torture. Press on. Write until it feels natural. Then when you're not writing you will have waves of anxiousness. Write again until your project is complete. Don't stop what the Lord started in you.

Write the book you've been dreaming of writing.

Did you find this helpful?
What questions did this trigger?
Would you like to hear more about writing?

Your comments, shares, and reviews are gold. Thanks for reading. I look forward to the next blog post. Hope you have a wonderful day. You are love! May this post be a light for any project you are working on. It doesn't have to be a book my friends.

You may find this post Answer Two or More helpful.

Answer Two or More

You may have more to offer than you realize.

Are you a note taker? Do you have little slips of paper laying around with scribbled words? How about the margins of books you read, do you write on those margins? Do you pull out a pen and paper when the preacher preaches? Are the notes on your phone full of things you write down? Are your tweets or facebook status' of strong conversational wisdom you and God have discussed? Do you blog? Are you a leader?

If you said yes to 2 or more of these questions then consider yourself a writer. Although you don't have some fancy platform of readers yet doesn't mean you are not a writer. You may be further in your writing calling then you realize, whether it's the early stages or advanced stages. In Gods timing, He will prompt you in the direction you need to go. Make yourself available to His calling on your life as a writer. Now is the time to be okay with what stage of writing you are in. It shall pass. You shall grow.

Continue on the 2 or more questions you answered yes to. Build on a few more from the list. This may require you to drop one of the ones you already answered yes to.

You don't have to have a book published to be a writer.

If you write, you are a writer.

Say it, "I am a writer."

You need to see yourself as God does. You are valuable to His kingdom. He loves you and your worth is greater in Him than mankind. Don't deny the value He already created for your life.

Matthew 10:29-31 TLB

"What's the price of a pet canary? Some loose change, right? And God cares what happens to it even more than you do. He pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail even numbering the hairs on your head! So don't be intimidated by all this bully talk. You're worth more than a million canaries.

Write.

Relaxing…

Last week I announced on Facebook
and shared a picture of the writing
of a new book of mine.

"✋❤️my attempt at starting the writing of a new book
#letsseeifthisworks #achristiannovelinverse
#letshopeitcomesout #amiupforthis #summerwork ❤️✋"

A week later, I already
have 25 pages written. For me
I am thinking that's pretty good
but it's going to take a lot more "twenty fives"
to complete this project.

So far tho, I am feeling pretty good
about it and plan to keep moving
forward. Lot's of thoughts, scenes,
and case scenario's running through my
mind. Like little bitty picture clips piecing
together….

I've been reading A Million Little Ways
by Emily P. Freeman over the last month.
Which has been perfect
timing for me, she talks about how others art
inspires the art within you. And does the
world really need another song, or
another book ect. Not really but the world
needs you to come alive and you need the world
to come alive…
alive in Christ.

When your awake, alive, you just might be
that very person that awakens the art
in the person next to you… Your art will
not look like theirs nor will theirs look like
yours.

I thank Emily for having the courage to
write her book to share her heart to open
someone else's heart. Two years ago
I would not be sitting here telling
you how I am writing another book,
simply because I knew then as
I still do to this day the timing
wasn't His. I walked a few other
roads to get where I am today.

For that I am very thankful,
He brought me out into the world
more, experiencing more and meeting
more people. Developing new
positive godly friendships…

He brought me from dark to light…

I encourage absolutely anyone to read
A Million Little Ways! It's not just for the
artist you know you will never be, because
rightly so you will not, but it's for everyone
to break free and realize we all are
making art right where we are
every single day in a million little ways…

I am very passionate about the very
truth behind all that and have expressed
it before…we all create art in some form!

I am all smiles…

Things in my sight this week…

I wanted to share with you a little behind
the scenes of just how I came up
with this painting.

these are the words that
stuck with me while painting....

To write, To teach

I am at a point in my life of wanting
to find a balance. A different kinda balance,
a balance that will fit my life at the moment
of being the stay home mom that I am.

One reason I rid photographing weddings,
by putting my camera on the shelf is the amount
of time it took away from my family on Saturdays.
Needing to find something more to do during
the week while every ones at school and work.
No ones getting married during those hours,
well at least not in my neck of the woods!

So for the past year after launching the sales
of my book (a tiny glimpse of inspiration of
my life already) I 've given myself alittle
free play time, still in the art world
with paint brushes, canvas, journals
etc. but I am thinking it's time to
move forward into alittle more.

More being one of two things or both:

1. writing another book, something fun,
something beyond what I've mentioned
in the past I would do, my list of books to write!

2. teaching an online art class, a personal
mix media art class.

Writing a book from my already list would
require me rumbling in some old emotions
and because I've done that with my first book
and the point I am at in my life I am thinking it's
not healthy. Being called to do something alittle more
fun, alittle more of a challenge, away from something
I am not so already attached to, I need a place
I can dream, dream and be free! A relaxing playground
yet that would still be inspiring to others.

I already have an ISBN number
I already have the knowledge, the in's and out's
of publishing a book. (layout, design, print, proof)
I just would need to plot out a good story,
have lots of time for hours of writing, have an editor
on stand by, etc.

I've always wanted to teach something, something
I am knowledgeable in. Teaching an online mix
media art class would so be up my alley. It would
be video classes taught so that the students could
work at their own pace in the comfort of their
own home. All I would need is a good video
recorder, editing, uploading videos, have private
class access, a private facebook group-for students
sharing class work, plan the class, create prompts,
etc. Even though this may seem like more to do it's mainly
because I've never done it before. And boy, oh boy, do
I love a challenge, a time to learn something new.

My thoughts are what do others think!?

Which one should I do, or should I do both!?

Tell me, tell me....

This may TAKE awhile

Remember the start of the gesso-book-pages
in one of my books!?
Well I wanted to give you an update
and keep you up to date
on how it's going!

One thing I am hoping for in 2012

To gain more outlets for book sales
on Daddy's Briefcase!!! I have a few
local ideas. If anyone has any ideas,
if your a book reviewer or if your a fellow
blogger looking for a guest, let me know!

I am happy to have so many
readers so far, but please remember if you have read
Daddy's Briefcase and would like to share a review do so
over at Amazon.com-click on here.  This helps others
as well as helps me in more than one way,
one being with more outlet sales. Meaning,
if someone sees there is an interest in me,
in my book they will be more willing to help
out with the additional outlets. Whether it be a magazine,
another bookstore, etc....thanks so much! Yall are
a BIG key to this success TOO!!!

I am not sure just how many sales will
ever be enough, it's really not about the
"sales" it's about me reaching out to others,
who are looking for some ray of light, hope!

Other ways you can help:
-by clicking the like but at the top
of the Amazon page-posted above.
-Also on that same amazon page you can scroll to the bottom
where it says, Tags Customers Associate with This Product
click on the ones that apply and/or you can create
your own words as tags, where it says create your first tag!

Pieces

For those of you who have read Daddy's Briefcase
may remember Banee. Banee, who was 13 at the time was my back seat DJ
back in the day -highschool- when my car only had am radio.

Banee recently requested a painting, "animal print" she said!

Hmmm, animal print "can you show me" something
to go by, an idea!? She mailed me this print out:

Awesome, awesome big bold leopard print, to work
I went. I shaped, I molded each piece...days would come
days would go. I told her it was summer, that it might take
longer. She waited patiently. The further I got with all the shaping
and molding, I begin to think about my life. Each day has been shaped
and molded, so that in the end I can say I did my very best. I have
to remind myself, I didn't just wake up this way!

i attached this on the back of the painting

starting process

see the texture-i heart texture
each textured piece was hand molded
if i was gonna do it, it was gonna be done right-my style
i have to say this is one picture that took me the longest time out of anything else i have painted

my hardest part when i paint a picture is being able to turn loose of it
i so usually can see all my work in my home some where
i usually run from room to room placing it in different places

i wrote this special little letter on the back of the pieces card
attached on the back

A few days after she recieved the painting, I recieved the
sweetest text message. Having the leopard paint in her living area
allows her to have a piece of me in her home. That's sweet stuff there!

Banee will always be my back seat DJ!

Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation

I am honored to share with you
I am one of the faces of fibrolamellar
on the Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation website.

This Foundation was founded by Tucker Davis in 2008
with the hope to raise awareness of FHC-Fibrolamellar
Hepatocellular Carcinoma-liver cancer
and possibly find a cure. As a very passionate person
about this rare cancer, Tucker lost his battle early last year!

His family and friends are
carrying out his wish to find better treatment,
find answers, find a CURE!!! Although I didn't ever
personally speak with Tucker, I was aware of his foundation
when I was contacted by his girlfriend.

What I am really happy to share with you is a portion of proceeds
from the first year sales of my book, Daddy's Briefcase
will be donated to Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation. Just like Tucker,
I've been very passionate about finding answers for this rare cancer...
it's my hopes that my small donation from the book sales
will do great things to carry on this foundation.

The Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation features
The Foundation :What We Believe, Who We Are
Tucker's Story: Tucker's Message, Tucker's Diagnosis and Treatment, A Mother's Story
Understanding Fibrolamellar
Research: Current FCF Research Project
Patients and Families: Get Help and Support, Faces of Fibrolamellar, Keep on Tuckin', Share Your Story
Ways To Help
and more...

I want to give a big shout out to those behind the
Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation.
What an outstanding job to carry out
Tucker's legacy...the FHC community needs you! This
is the most FHC activity, other than the facebook group,
Fibrolamellars of the World Unite,
I have see and been apart of, Thank You!

I've dreamed for along time for something like this, Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation! In a weird twisted way,
I am honored to be one of the faces...
to help make a difference!!!

Daddy's Briefcase

Being the center of a prayer is powerful!
  But very indescribable...

Eleven years ago, this time of year,
I was the center of a gigantic-
  statewide/nationwide- prayer while
fighting for my life battling LIVER CANCER.

During that time not only was my life
touched, but all those around me-family and friends,
 even people I didn't know.

So, you know how you hear people say,
"I feel it's my calling" to do such-in-such...
well guess what!? I am here to tell you it has been
"my calling" to fully share my story with everyone!

Yikes!!!

Just for me that's scary, I am a very private person!

After five long years of trying to talk
myself out of writing the details down
in a book, it's finally finished.

You can order it here!

Thanks to everyone for your support and happy readings...
ashley :)

An astonishing journey straight from the heart of a young cancer survivor...

At the young age of twenty-three, Ashley Murphy, already a wife and mother, struggled to find her way in the working world. When finally her dream job was offered! She gave a two-week notice immediately. Only it was cut short to one week, due to being diagnosed with cancer. No time for illness, Ashley thought there must have been a mistake. As she grasped for strength from those rallied around her, she quickly realized the one she really wanted was not there, her Daddy. Just three years prior, Ashley stood beside him as he took his last breath. Then the next day, while planning his funeral, more unsettling news arrived.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Daddy's Briefcase will be donated each year to a Cancer Foundation of the authors choice.

Please, please once you have read Daddy's Briefcase  post a review over at amazon.com under customer reviews, thanks!

Proof

A week after finishing my book cover design,
I fought myself but finally ordered
a proof of Daddy's Briefcase
today!

After talking with other authors,
I realize this is completely normal
to have the jitters, but man.

So, I must wait patiently.

I hear it can take a week, two weeks
or longer to receive your proof.

I will keep you posted!

ISBN

In order to sale my book, Daddy's Briefcase,
I have to have a ISBN,
International Standard Book Number,
a unique number that identifies a specific publication
of a book.

If you look on the back of any book,
where the bar code is, the number that
appears is the ISBN.

I purchased a block of ten,
just days ago. This makes it seem so
real that I am actually going to have a book
in print one day soon!

I chose a block of ten, because once
they are yours the numbers never expire,
and I hope in the future to publish another book.

If you need information or looking to
purchase an ISBN number,
I purchased mine from myidentifiers.

A room with books is a room full of friends...

These are a few random books you will find in my home library,
some have been read
some have not been read
some will be read
some will not be read
some have been read halfway
some have not been read halfway
some will be read halfway
some will not be read halfway
but I consider them all my friends, inspiration!

do you see your book among these...?
do you see a book you have read among these...?
do you see a book among these you have?

TODAY is the day.... nine years ago!

Well guys if you have looked around my blog enough,
you have gained insight that I am writing my first
book, Daddy's Briefcase.

A book, something that I some days don't/didn't
think is/was possible. Believe me it has been very trying
to say the least.

Now, I am convinced any of us can do
anything we want as long as we set our heart, mind, body
and soul out to do so. But I’m obviously new to this book-writing
and publishing work, so I value any input, advice, suggestions,
helpful links, etc. that anyone wants to pass on!

Do you every see people in troubled times?
And secretly or openly wonder how they handle themselves,
or just want all the juicy details of how it all went down!

Nine years ago TODAY, is when it all started,
being told there was a spot on my liver.
Ultimately, I received the worst news
most people humanly possible could gain.

I was diagnosed with a rare form of LIVER CANCER,
at the time it was so uncommon for someone
my age, 23, to receive this type of news.

Already at age of 20,
I lost my father due to liver failure, he was 48.
The following day my grandmother died due to pancreatic cancer...

Prior at age 19, I gave birth to my first child.

My plate was full, way beyond FULL!!!
I promise ya!
So how did I survive?

In 2005, I set out to start my journey
of sharing my cancer story on paper.

One page of the first chapter was typed,
I ran, the emotions were still there,
I didn't even realize it.

Another year passes, a tug constantly
on my heart lingered, I had to find a way
to get my story out there, to share my struggles
in hopes of helping others, in 2006, I started typing
again.

This go around was better, I am still working on it.
Yes, it's taking this long guys.

It is in my hopes you will join me on this journey,
we can complete this together.

I hope to wrap things up this year!

So you can get all the juicy details...
I can't wait!

Thanks,
ashley:)

p.s. I am going to be looking for early readers if anyone
is interested shoot me an email.
